Set in 1890 Dr. Grace Burnham travels from New York to a rural plantation in Prue to treat Martin Marquez a child that has autism.  As she goes about her work, Dr. Burnham and the boy are being blamed for several natural disasters hitting the area by the local villagers. 

The Power (2021)
Set in 1974 a young Nurse is working a night shift in an old hospital. On this night the power goes out due to a miners’ strike. In the powerless hospital she deals with the dark and the supernatural.

12 Hour Shift (2020)
Set in Arkansas 1999 Nurse Mandy hands over a pair of kidneys to her cousin Regina to deliver to some organ harvesters. The Regina loses them. Mandy has to procure more. While Mandy is going about that Regina decides to take matters into her own hands. While all of this is happening, an escaped prisoner is also running around the hospital. 

The Influence (2019)
Nurse Alicia returns home with her family to help her sister with their dying mother. While there she deals with traumas from the past and an angry witch.

Jacob Martin is set to receive a large inheritance if he can produce a death certificate for an aunt that was a patient of the closed Eloise Asylum. Jacob along with some friends break into the building where they find ghosts and evil.

A group of Nurses decide to play a game of Bloody Mary at an asylum that they work at. They are successful in summoning the ghost who proceeds in killing the residents and staff.

Five college girls have to spend the night in hospital built in 1910. As the night passes the ghosts that died there and were removed through the death tunnel which was used for removal of bodies from the grounds haunt the girls.

Student Nurse Karen Davis living in Tokyo is sent to a haunted house where she is cursed/haunted by ghosts.

Kingdom Hospital in Lewiston Maine is haunted due to being built upon a Civil War Era mill fire and the former hospital that also burned down. The staff deals with the hauntings (and other really strange supernatural events) as best they can while another disaster looms.

Set 13 years after Bride of Re-Animator Herbert is in prison when young Dr. Phillips comes to work at the prison. Dr Phillips having witnessed/been affected by events from the second film; seeks Dr. West and helps him to continue his experiments.

A lunatic that believes he is a MD escapes from the insane asylum he is in. He goes back to the town his father was killed in years earlier and treats/kills the people of the town.

A Doctor tired of city life moves to the country town of Canaima, California with his family to start a practice. While this is happening an invasive hybrid spider is spreading throughout the area. The Doctor, a spider expert, a local exterminator, and the sheriff must work together to save the town.

A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)
The last of the Elm Street children have been attacked and have been placed in a psychiatric hospital. The survivors along with a Doctor devise ways to battle Freddy Kruger. 

Re-Animator (1985) 
Inspired by the short story Herbert West Re-Animator by H.P Lovecraft [First Published in 1922] A medical student and his friend experiment with a serum that reanimates the dead to less than the desired results. Followed by two sequels Bride of Re-Animator (1990) and Beyond Re-Animator (2003) 

The Doctor and the Devils (1985)

Based on a true story. In 1828 Dr. Thomas Rock has his assistant Dr. Murry pay large amounts of money to obtain fresh cadavers from less than legal sources. When a pair of miscreants learn how much can be made with body snatching, they decide that the way to get the freshest product is to create it. After a suspicious Dr. Murry learns what is going on he helps to stop the pair.   

Visiting Hours (1982) 
A Mad Man attacks an activist TV journalist sending her to the hospital. The madman unhappy with only injuring his victim tries to attack her in the hospital. In doing this a Nurse catches his eye and he proceeds to stalk and attack both of them.

Halloween 2 (1981)
Laurie Strode having survived the events of the first movie is admitted to the hospital. Michael Myers tracks her down and starts to kill everybody on the grounds.

X-Ray (1981)
During a routine checkup in an LA hospital under renovation Susan Jeremy gets trapped in the hospital with half explanations and staff that is just following orders. While a killer dressed in surgical attire stalks and torments her while killing employees, and visitors of the hospital. 

The Night Nurse (1978)
Prudence Simpson is hired as a private nurse for a former opera singer. Strange and supernatural things happen within the house and to as soon as she is hired.

Nurse Sherri (1978)
A Nurse is possessed by an evil spirit and kills the people around her. A blind ex NFL player with knowledge of Voodoo and some of Nurse Sherri’s coworkers seek to exorcise the evil spirit.

A man in a coma has psychic powers and tries to win over a nurse and do away with anybody that gets in his way. 

Kingdom of the Spiders (1977)
Set in Camp Verde, Arizona, Tarantulas that have mutated because of the overuse of pesticides have started attacking livestock. The town’s veterinarian Dr. Robert Hansen is called to investigate. A spider's nest is discovered and destroyed. This sets the spiders on a migration towards the town cutting Camp Verde off from the rest of the world. 

Born For Hell (1976)
Inspired by the Richard Speck killings. A Vietnam Vet goes to Belfast, Ireland and attacks, tortures and kills 8 nursing students one night. 

Horror Hospital (1973)
Musician Jason Jones needing a vacation, heads out to the country. While on his trip he meets another traveler, Judy Peters. The pair soon targeted by a Mad Doctor that is using people for his experiments. 

Burke and Hare (1972) 
Based on the true story. Burke and Hare start to supply medical colleges with cadavers. They get their supply through a variety of ways. 

I Am Legend (1964/2007) The Omega Man (1971) Based on the short story I am Legend by Richard Matheson [First Published in 1954]. Most of humanity has been killed or mutated by a virus the last man that is immune or vaccinated depending on version seeks to find the cure.

The Flesh and the Fiends (1960) 
William Burke and William Hare supply Doctors and medical colleges with cadavers. While various Doctors do not ask questions or look the other way on how they are able to supply fresh cadavers often. 

Circus of Horror (1960)
Set in 1947 Dr. Rossiter a plastic surgeon flees to France after a botched surgery. In France he comes to own a circus and employes women that he has operated on. When his employees try to leave, they die in freak accidents attracting the attention of law enforcement. 

White Witch Doctor (1953)
Widowed Nurse Ellen Burton goes to Belgium, Congo to work for a Missionary Doctor.  To get to the mission she hires an animal hunter, guide, and treasure hunter. Together they have adventures, face dangers from the wildlife, a local Witch Doctor and a native tribe. 

Horror Maniacs (1948)
The first film adaption of the Burke and Hare of Edinburgh, Scotland body snatcher and murder story. 

I Walked With a Zombie (1943)
Nurse Betsy Connell is hired to care for the Jessica the wife of a plantation owner on a Caribbean Island. As she tries to help Jessica as various family secrets are revealed.

Lai-Chung is a woman from determined to own a flat in a wealthy building with a view of Victoria Habor. When the owners decide to hold out for more Lia-Chung can earn in time she has a plan to reduce the value of the property. She kills an employee and several residents and guests of the building lowering the value of the property. 

Empire of the Ants (1977)
Inspired by the short story Empire of The Ants by H.G. Wells [First Published in 1905]. Real Estate developer and agent Marylin Fryser is trying to sell valueless beachfront property on a small island in Florida. While taking a group of prospective clients on a tour they are attacked by giant ants that have taken over the island and the people that live there. 

The Evictors (1979)
Set in 1942 a couple of newlyweds Ben and Ruth Watkins move into a house in rural Louisiana. After moving in they learn that the house has a dark history starting with a shootout from a bank foreclosure in 1928. Followed by the following owners meeting a violent end. Shortly after moving in Ben and Ruth become the next targets.

Mason McGinness is a salesman in need of employment is hired to sell an old very haunted murder home. 

The Haunted Mansion (2003)
Based on the Disney Theme Park Ride: The Haunted Mansion realtors Jim and Sara Evers are contacted about selling an old mansion. Eger for a big sale the Evers family decide to see the property before going on a family trip. At the mansion the family discover a mystery and ghosts haunt the property. 

House Hunting (2012)
Two families The Hays and The Thompsons looking for a new home attend an open house. Only to find they cannot leave and are haunted by ghosts and visions of murders. 

Open House (1987)
A serial killer is targeting real estate agents. As the body count grows the killer contacts a TV Psychologist Dr. Davis Kelley. Dr. Kelley working with the police soon discovers that his real estate girlfriend is one of the killer's targets and races to stop the murders before they both become the next victims. 

Open House (2010)
Alice and Josh are going through a separation and divorce and selling their house. During an open house a couple invade the house taking Alice hostage and killing people that come to the house. 

Poltergeist (1982)
Steve Freeling a real estate agent is selling and living with his family in a planned community called Cuesta Verde. Everything is going well until strange natural and supernatural events start to occur. As the haunting escalate the family seek help from paranormal investigators.

Sheila and Joel Hammond are real estate agents living and working in Santa Clarita, California. When Shela gets sick and becomes a zombie. The family band together to keep Sheila safe, feed, and to find a cure, while selling houses.

Richard Scary is a real estate agent who is struggling with selling property. When he gets a too good to be true listing from a coworker. Being desperate he takes on the contract only to learn that the house is very haunted with a serial killer past and does not want to be sold.

Every 10 years The American Library Association releases a top 100 list of books that are most challenged/requested by people and organizations to be banned from libraries and schools.

After barley defeat the Formics an alien race that want to take over the Earth. The Earth government starts training children to be future military leaders. The protagonist Ender Wiggin is a genius at tactics, games, and strategy quickly rises in the ranks to the point of being the perfect General.

The Documentary Scary Stories (2018) is about the books, the author, becoming one of the most banned book series and the art it has inspired.

At the final party of the summer a high school freshman calls the police ending the party. Unable to say why she called the police due to a trauma that happened during the party she becomes a loner. Through art she is able to overcome what happened and speak up.

The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brien; [First published in 1990]: A Soldier’s Sweetheart (1998)  
A set of connected short stories about US soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War. 

To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee: [First published in 1960]: To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)        Atticus Finch, a lawyer in the depression era Deep South defends a black man accused of raping a white woman in a court of law. While teaching his children about predigest people have.

The Walking Dead (series) by Robert Kirkman & Illustrator Tony Moore; [First Published in 2004]:The Walking Dead (2010-2022); Fear The Walking Dead (2015-2023); The Walking Dead: World Beyond (2020) 
Deputy Sheriff Rick Grimes is injured in the line of duty and falls into a coma. When he wakes up, he finds the hospital deserted and the world changed by the walking dead. Rick and other survivors fight to stay alive.

 

Movie Theater as the Setting and or Plot/Theme + Video Rental Stores

Due to the shortness of the cinema background, I combined the video rental store post. 

I really miss Movie theaters so I thought it might be interesting and fun to see a movie theater or drive in on film. 

Big Time Operators Aka The Smallest Show on Earth (1957)
Bill Travers inherits a barley operating business a cinema called The Bijou from a distant Uncle. Bill and his wife Jean decide to sell the business only to find it in bad shape. Bill and Jean start the work to make a profit from the inheritance. 

Bikini Drive-In (1995) 
Kim Taylor inherits her grandfather's old drive-in movie theater. Having fond memories of the place she wants to get it up and running again. However, there is $25,000 in taxes due in about a week. So, Kim her friends and the employees of the drive in create and implement a plan that involves wearing little to nothing. 

Cinema Paradiso (1988)                                                                                                                            A successful Film Maker reflects on his childhood, his family and mentor the projectionist at the town's only movie theater in a small Sicilian town.    

Christmas at the Drive-In (2022)
When the local Drive-In is going to be closed and torn down. A property lawyer/professor that wants to save it has to prove the worth and value to the community by Christmas which is in three weeks. As she works to revamp the business, she reconnects with her first love a property developer that wants to tear it down and owns the McCarthy Drive-In. 

Christmas Movie Magic (2021)
Reporter Allie Blackman sent to write about the 65^th anniversary of a Christmas movie and song “Christmas With You” at the filming location, White Falls, New York. While there she finds message to a mysterious woman from the movie star/song writer. She joins with a movie theater owner and film expert Brad Westfield to find the woman and the origin of the song.

Dead In Drive-In (1986)
Set in the future where sickness, economic collapse, food shortages, and 5 Rambo movies have been made. A recently unemployed teen and his girlfriend go to a drive in only to discover it is a trap/concentration camp for the unemployed and other unwanted members of society. Can he escape? 

Demons (1985)                                                                                                                                  Several people are given free tickets to a screening to a new horror film. After the film starts demons start attacking the people trapped in the theater. 

Drive In (1976)
A group of people (mostly teens) in 1976 Texas have adventures at the local drive-in theater one weekend night. 

Drive In Massacre (1977)
The police in a rural California town search for a serial killer that uses a sword to kill at a Drive -In theater. 

Electric Shadows (2004)
Two childhood friends come back together after an accident with one of them reading the others memoir of their childhood and an outdoor theater and the movies that was a big part of their lives.  

Empire of Light (2022)
Set in England in the early 1980's a cinema manager and a new employee bond and heal while dealing with challenges of mental health, everyday life, and wanting to escape. 

It's A Wonderful Knife (2023)
this is a reimagining of It's A Wonderful Life (1947) and It Happened One Christmas (1977) as a teen horror movie. A year after Winnie Carruthers stops a masked killer on Christmas Eve. Winnie is having a bad Christmas with grieving her friends who died, not getting into college, and finding her boyfriend cheating among other things. She wishes things had turned out different, so she finds herself in a world where she had never been born. In this world the killer was never caught and is still murdering the people of the town, and nobody knows who she is. Winnie tries to find people who believe her story as well as a way to get home. 

The Last Horror Film (1982)
A New York City taxi driver dreams of being a famous director and decided to follow/stalk actress Jana Bates to the Cannes Film Festival if France to get her to be in his film. While in France the people close to the actress start getting killed one by one. 

The Last Matinee (2020)
Set in the 1993 people go to the Montevideo Opera Cinema to see a Frankenstein Film. As the show starts a killer starts to take out audience and staff one by one. 

The Last Matinee (2021)
In a small town in an old-fashioned movie theater a killer goes after the patrons and the employees in the theater one by one during the last show of the day. 

The Majestic (2001)                                                                                                                                  Set in 1951 a Hollywood screen writer Peter Appleton has a car accident after a night of drinking and bad news he loses his memory and washes up in a small town where he is mistaken for the lost MIA son of the local movie theater owner Harry Trimble. Peter revives the local treater and brings life back to the town before he regains his memory.  Having regained his memories, he has to face congress and the House on Un-American Activates after being accused of being a communist.

Set during the Cuban Missile Crisis a showman promotes a science fiction movie in a South Florida. While a boy has a coming-of-age adventure at the theater that the film promotion is taking place. 

Midnight Matinee (1989)                                                                                                                            A small town is restarting a horror movie marathon after a murder at a previous movie marathon. Will tragedy strike again? 

Midnight Movie (2008) 
A special screening of a lost horror film the audience and employees are trapped in the theater as the killer comes off the screen and attacks everybody trapped inside. 

Phantom of the Megaplex (2000)                                                                                                            At a 26 screen megaplex an assistant manager must keep the theater running after the manager disappears, look after his younger siblings and set up for a special premier: while a Phantom sabotaging and haunting the place. 

Popcorn (1991)
 A group of film students put on an all-night horror movie marathon. As marathon progresses a killer kills the students usually with the theme of the movie that is playing. 

Popcorn (2007)                                                                                                                                          Dany falls for a hot girl bus is unable to get her attention. So, he gets a job at her place of work a movie theater.   

Porno (2019)
Set in 1992 a 2-screen movie theater staffed by Christians discover a basement level with a third screen which showed adult content in the past. While exploring they find an old film reel. Curious about it they vote, and a majority of the staff decide to screen the old reel. Doing this releases a succubus trapped within the film. The succubus traps, temps and attacks the people in the theater until they are able to trap or destroy the demon. 

Purple Rose of Cairo (1985)                                                                                                                    Set during the Great Depression a waitress goes to the movies regularly. During her latest visit a charter comes off the screen from the film she is watching.   

Ruby (1977)                                                                                                                                              
16 years after Ruby's boyfriend and father of her child is killed/vows revenge; Ruby runs a Drive In employing the gang members that killed her boyfriend. The gang members/employees are killed in creative in a supernatural drive-in theme.  

Save The Cinema (2022)
Based on the true story of Liz Evans who worked to save The Lyric Cinema a local cinema and theatre in Carmarthen, Wales.  

Splendor (1989)
Splendor is the name of an old movie theater in an Italian town that is on the verge of closing due to debts and low attendance. The current owner and manager Jordan who inherited the business from his father reminisces about his past and the glory days of the theater. 

Special Mention 

Dimension 404: Episode 2: Cinethrax (2017) A film buff and his niece attend a new 3D movie that opens a gate to another dimension. They try and stop what is trying to get thru. 

Video Rental Stores in film 

I miss video rental stores where I live all of them have closed is this is the closest thing to seeing them again. These films take place or have important scenes in video rental stores.

An interesting fact is that the video rental setting is used 6 times during the 80's and 90's While 2000 to 2019 The time of Netflix, Redbox and Streaming the video rental setting is used 9 times not including the South Park special mention.  

Another interesting fact is that Blockbuster is used only twice South Park and Yes Man. The rest are independents or are portrayed as independents. 

Remote Control (1988)
A video store clerks stumbles onto an alien plot to take over earth by brainwashing people with a B grade1950s science fiction movie.

The Fisher King (1991)
After inspiring a listener's mass shooting a shock jock Jack Lucas falls apart until he starts helping Parry a man whose wife was killed in the shooting.

Clerks (1994)
A day in the lives of two clerks Dante (convince store) and Randal (video rental store) as they annoy customers, discuss movies, and play hockey on the roof of the store.

Scream (1996)
After the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a killer, who targets the girl and her friends by using horror films as part of a deadly game.

Superstar (1999)
A girl working for a video rental store works for attaining her dreams of fame and kissing the Big Man on Campus.

Loser (2000)
University freshman, Paul Tannek is branded a loser by his hard partying roommates and set up to be kicked out of his dorm, he gets a place off campus. After saving Dora Diamond from being overdosed at a party; he falls in love with her however she is involved with elitist Professor Edward Alcott.

Sugar and Spice (2001)
When high school cheerleader Diane gets knocked up by her boyfriend. They get married and get low paying jobs at a grocery store bank and a video rental store. Wanting to give the best life for her twins Diane and her squad mates plan to steal needed money. Researching bank robbery from movies and using their cheerleading skills, the girls devise a plan to rob a bank.

Jersey Girl (2004)
After his career is destroyed by an unexpected tragedy and a personal melt down, a single father Ollie Trinke grieves and just getting by. Until meeting a beautiful love interest Maya at a video rental store she works at; he starts to turn his life around.

I Am Legend (2007)
When an unstoppable virus that turns human race into bloodthirsty mutants, civilization's last hope for a cure lies with scientist Robert Neville, the sole survivor in New York City. Based on I Am Legend and Other Stories by Richard Mathenson[First Published in 1954].

Be Kind Rewind (2008)
A video-store employee accidentally erases every tape on the shelves, in order to stay in business, the employees try and re-create all the films, with their own camera, with a budget of zero.

Good Dick (2008)
An extreme introverted girl that rents soft-core porn from a local video rental store.  While there she meets a video store clerk who vows to win her heart.

Yes Man (2008)
Based on the memoir Yes Man by Danny Wallace [First Published in 2005]. Banker Carl Allen has gotten through a bitter divorce, lives his life going to work and watching rented videos after work. Until he goes to a self-improvement seminar; at the seminar the guru makes Carl say yes to everything that comes his way.

This Means War (2012)
A pair of best friends and CIA agents wage an epic battle against one another when they discover they are dating the same woman.

A Nightmare on Facetime (10/24/2012) Season 16; Episode 12*
The 235th episode of the series overall. Randy Marsh purchases a Blockbuster video store and demands that his reluctant family work in it on Halloween with him. Aspects of which parody the 1980 film The Shining, and an episode of The Simpson's Treehouse of Horror V: Season 6: Episode 109 (1994) Act 1: The Shinning

Beyond the Gates (2016)
After their father's disappearance, two brothers Gordon and John reunite to close down his video store. While doing this they find an old VHS board game and decide to play. On the tape, a ghostly woman offers them a way to rescue their father.

Blockbuster (2022)
A Netflix sitcom about the last Blockbuster store the manager trying to keep it open and the employees that still work there. (Netflix making this seems ironic).  (Update Netflix killed Blockbuster again). 

The Last Video Store (2023)
A woman comes to Blaster Video Store (the last video rental store in Canada) with a cursed VHS tape which results in the people at the store experiencing a strange supernatural experience.

In a video rental store in Australia two young employees start a romantic relationship until the girls criminal ex shows up to cause trouble. 

* While several TV shows have episodes use a video rental store as a location This is a special inclusion because it covers what things were like with video rental in 2012. 
Blockbuster ceased operation in 2013 with only a few stores left only one left as of today. 

Michael Meyers Halloween Films ranked best to worst

Halloween (1978)
The original film that kicked it off is a classic that has never been repeated.

Halloween (2007)
The director expanded Michael Meyers a little but copied the original enough to earn the number 2 spot.

Halloween II (1981)
This is early in the slasher days and does really well with following up the first film. Taking place just after the first film ends. 
 
Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Meyers (1988)
Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Meyers (1989)
I do have a soft spot for parts 4 and 5, both are enjoyable but the psychic thing and leaving out the babysitter elements kind of work against it.

Halloween: Resurrection (2002)
This one is fun and gets it away from the family story line which is sometimes a weak point in the franchise.

Halloween: Curse of Michael Meyers: Producers Cut (1995)
This needs a final extended cut to fix the holes in it (the new cut would rate higher on this list). That aside it is a solid film that introduces Michael's Grand Nephew. Could be a new starting point for the franchise.

Halloween Kills (2021)

An improvement over 2018 part of the set. It does have problematic elements, but it is a decent sequel in the franchise. I will admit that I prefer traditional/original slasher films. 

Halloween H20 (1998)
This one was really influenced by the "90's PG-13 trend" started by Scream (1996) and I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997).  It has a lot of style but lacks something and the family story plot is really overused at this point. It also ignores films 4-6 in my opinion it should have included some back story about Laurie Strode faking her death. (Just realized that this is part of a different set and does not follow parts 4-6). 

Halloween II (2009)
The director started really strong in the opening at the hospital but after that it went to cerebral. 

Halloween (2018) 
This is not a slasher or even a horror movie really. This is a thriller that ignores everything after the 1978 film bring back Laurie Strode again. I really hope that the next Michael Meyers film ignores this movie.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) Is a good film, and I would be interested in seeing a reboot or sequel to this one. This does is not about the Michael Meyers.

When I first starting my blog, I had a few plans of what I was going to do with this blog; a few of those ideas I decided not to pursue.
