Films about a Second US Civil War - Updated

There are a lot of articles about the US splitting and becoming two countries and how Democrats and or Republicans or some other group, faction, organization is dangerous, evil and must be delt with by any means possible. With the end result most likely resulting in a second Civil War. So, I created a list of movies that explore a Second Civil War within the US. - 2021

With the new Civil War movie, I updated a few things. With a civil war the other side is always scary while your side is the oppressed victims. - 2024.   

One day I expect somebody will create a film that really explores a Second US Civil War. Which is a subject that has a lot of interest. Until then this is what I could find which includes a few are kind of related or symbolic/metaphorical works with varied degrees of relevance. I hope that Hollywood creates a film or TV series that gives you what you really want. Until then this is what is available. 


The Second Civil War (1997)
After skirmish creates orphan refuges; an NGO decides to send them to Idaho however the Governor closes his state. The US President chooses to reopen the state by any means necessary. Resulting in a civil war. While this is happening the media feeds and helps escalate tensions.   

Civil War (2024) 
When 19 US States succeed from the US this sparks a new Civil War. A group of journalists from different parts of the country travel report and document what is happening with glimpses of the major urban battle fronts to the rural, and refugee areas. 

Barb Wire (1996) 
Inspired by Casablanca (1942) The basic plots of the story are the same. During a second US Civil War a woman going by the name Barb Wire owns and operates a politically natural night club in the last free city state in the US. While also operating as a soldier of fortune. One day her married ex comes to ask for help getting his wife and some plans and information out of the country. 

Captain America: Civil War (2016)
After a series of tragic disasters as seen in the earlier movies. The US, and other Government have creating laws to oversee and control The Avengers, superhumans/superheroes. This splits the team into two groups one that believes that government oversite and control is for the public good while the other group believes that personal freedom less government involvement is for the greater good. 

Jerrico (2006-2008) 
After 23 major cities in the US are destroyed the town of Jericho, Kansas is largely unaffected due to it isolated location, small size and its location near natural resources. The series mainly focus on the town and the people that live there. Various groups, and factions are fighting over who is in control of the country. 

Bushwick (2017)
Texas along with several other states decide to succeed from the union. In doing this a war breaks out with New York becoming a battlefield.  The story is told from the point of view of a college student and a janitor/former military veteran try to survive and make it so safety. 

The Purge (2013), The Purge: Anarchy (2014), The Purge: Election Year (2016), The First Purge (2018), The Purge (TV series) (2018-2019), The Forever Purge (2021) 
Set in the future has the US has been taken over by a group called The New Founding Fathers. To cut down on crime, poverty and those that need/use social services. All crime is legal for 12 hours. The movies and TV series show various people of different backgrounds, status, and classes deal with and are affected by the events of that night.  

Hoover Vs The Kennedy’s: The Second Civil War (1987) Miniseries on the feud between FBI Director J Edgar Hoover and the Kennedy Family. Starting at the 1960 Democratic Convention and ending with the death of Robert Kennedy in 1968. 

The Patriot (1998) 
Inspired by the novel The Last Canadian by William C. Heine [First Published in 1974]. A leader of a militia group is put on trial by the US government. Wanting revenge, he infects the judge presiding over the case with a manmade virus. The virus ends up spreading quickly causing the town to be quarantined. A local immunologist races to find the cure.

The Park is Mine (1985)
Based on the novel The Park is Mine by Stephen Peters [First Published in 1981] Before Veterans Day Mitch Garnett a Vietnam Veteran takes control of Central Park in New York City, New York with mines, guns and booby traps. He has done this to call attention to Veterans Issues. In his demonstration a hostage reporter taken along to document his side of the standoff.

The Chocolate War (1988)
Based on The Chocolate War, by Robert Cormier [First published in 1974]. One boy takes on a secret society at a Catholic School by not selling chocolate in the annual chocolate sale. A secret society of students seeks to punish and put the boy back into his place.

Invasion U.S.A. (1985)
A Soviet backed group start to attack and terrorize the US to turn is against each other. However, they failed to kill Chuck Norris and just pissed him off instead. 

Messiah of Evil (1977)
After receiving a letter from her artist father to stay away and that the town of Point Doom, California and that there is a spreading evil in the town. Arletty travels to his house only to find it empty with strange paintings of grey people. She searches for information about her father's whereabouts. While searching she meets other people from out of town that have also heard warnings of a spreading evil. After being kicked out of the hotel they were at they stay at the house as well. The group starts seeing more strange things until the affected people over run the town. Arletty is spared and told to tell the world that they are coming from the small town to the large cities. She does as she is told only to be locked up waiting for them to reach her. 

1984 (1956/1984)                                                     
Based on the novel 1984 by George Orwell [First Published in 1949]. In a future the Earth has been split into Empires. In Oceania one of these three Empires, Winston Smith a man that works for the Ministry of Truth rewriting history, and news to fit the government narrative. One day he meets Julia a woman and falls in love an act of rebellion in itself.  This leads him to become an enemy of the State. 

Fahrenheit 451 (1966) (2018)
Based on Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury [First published in 1953]. Set in the future where books are outlawed a fireman one who sets fire to books and houses that they are hidden in. Rebels and joins a resentence groups who memorize and share the world’s great literature.

A list of films about with Pandemics and or Epidemics

With the Corona Virus: Covid 19 so active in the world these types of films will be popular as they were when SARS was uncontained. I expect that some of these titles will get remade. 


Pandemic = An illness that affects the population at large and worldwide.

Epidemic = affects a people at a certain place and time in high rates but is contained.

Epidemics 

Containment (2016) 
A Remake of the miniseries Cordon (2014). A man-made disease makes its way to the general population in Atlanta, Georgia. Unable to stop it early The US Government quarantines a large section of the city. 

28 Days Later… (2002) 
Animal activists break into a laboratory to free the lab animals. While releasing the test animals they release a Rage Virus upon the world. 28 Days later a man in a coma wakes up to find London seemingly abandoned.  

Cabin Fever (2002) (2016) 
Five college students go to a secluded cabin. While at the cabin a patient zero that has contracted a flesh-eating sickness dies and falls in a water reservoir that supplies the cabin. One by one the students get sick. The 2002 version is followed by 2 sequels. 

The Patriot (1998)

Voyage of Terror (1998)
An Ebola like virus infects the passengers and crew of a cruise ship Orion Star. As Doctors and scientists seek to find a cure while several passengers try and escape by any means necessary.  

Contagious (1997) 
When Shrimp tainted with Cholera is served on a plane headed for L.A. Once in LA it quickly spreads. A Doctor that works for a CDC like organization fights to stop the spread of the disease. 

Outbreak (1995) 
An African monkey is a carrier for a deadly and contagious virus which is captured and smuggled into the US. The virus quickly mutates to airborne and spreads among the population of a small California town. The CDC and United States Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases work to contain and cure the illness.


Black Death A.K.A Quiet Killer (1992) Based on the book The Black Death by Gwyneth Cravens & John S Marr [First Published in 1977] A young girl contracts the plague from a squirrel while on vacation. After she succumbs to the sickness, the City of New York and Dr. Nora Hart do what they can to keep it from spreading. 

Variola Vera (1982)
Based on the true story of a smallpox outbreak in Yugoslavia in 1972. 

Killer On Board (1977)
A deadly virus is unknowingly brought on board a cruise ship. The virus quickly spreads to the passengers and crew killing those infected and causing others to panic. 

The Cassandra Crossing (1976) 
A plague is discovered on a passenger train traveling through Europe. The train is quickly sealed and quarantined. A Doctor, his writer ex-wife and others on the train try to keep the passengers alive.  

Stigma (1972) 
A Doctor goes to a remote island community and discovers a syphilis outbreak being hidden by the town

The Andromeda Strain (1971/2008) 
Based on the novel The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton [First Published in 1969] After a satellite crash lands in Arizona in a nearby town all of the animals and only 2 people die within minutes of coming into contact with a pathogen later called Andromeda. A Group of scientist labor to stop the pathogen.  

A Matter of WHO (1961) 
After a man flying into England presents with smallpox an agent of the World Health Organization is sent to investigate.

They Rode West (1954) 
1st Lt. Allen Steward MD is a newly commissioned officer is sent to his first posting at a western fort near an Indian reservation for a tribe of Kiowa. In his new post he clashes with the fort commander Col. Waters and the Medicine Men with the treatment and prevention of malaria. 

The Killer That Stalked New York (1950) 
Smuggler Sheila Bennet is carrying a fortune in diamonds is also a smallpox carrier and has unknowingly infected other people. A Treasure Agent and a Doctor are searching for her for different reasons.

Panic In The Streets (1950) 
When a body is found on the docks of New Orleans it is revealed that they were suffering from the pneumonic plague. A Doctor, the police with the support of the Mayor track down the people that may have come into contact with the pathogen. 

The Painted Veil (1934) (2006)
Based on the novel The Painted Veil by W. Somerset Maugham [First Published in 1925]. Set in the 1920's Kitty a woman of British high society gets married to a Doctor based out of China. Having married him for the wrong reasons she quickly has an affair. When her husband finds out he gives her a choice of divorce or to go with him to face a cholera epidemic in rural China. Together head to the outbreak where they grow as people and face the realities of marriage. 



Pandemic

Chinese Doctors (2021)
Starting in 2019 the film shows a fictionalized account of what Doctors in Wuhan went through. As well as how China delt with Covid 19 outbreak. 

To The Lake (2019-2022)
A new deadly virus appears in Moscow, Russia the city, then the country and lastly the world shut down. Sergey takes his girlfriend, her son along with his ex-wife and their own son and a neighbor family go to an uninhabited island to escape the virus. 

The Last Ship (2014-2018) 
Inspired by the book The Last Ship by William Brinkley [First Published in 1988]. The Nathan James has been in the Antarctic for several months under commutations black out. When the mission has been completed, they learn that most of the world has been wiped out by a pandemic and that they have the one person most likely to create the cure.


Contagion (2011) 
A woman returns from Hong Kong dies within days from a flu. A Day later her son also dies. Then it quickly spreads around the world. The rest of the film show various stories of people working to stop/cure the illness, taking advantage of the situation and a few just trying to survive as the world slows to a crawl. 

Pandemic (2009) 
After a woman is misdiagnosed, her Doctor realizes that a new and deadly disease is going to become a pandemic. The Doctor and other health officials race to stop it from spreading, find its origin, and cure or vaccine. 

Blindness (2008) 
Based on the novel Blindness by Jose Saramago [First Published in 1995] One day various people of all social and economic classes are struck down with something that causes blindness. The afflicted are quarantined and mostly forgotten.  A Group of survivors fight for safety and freedom. 

Pandemic (2007)
A Bird Flu called riptide virus kills an American surfer on his way home from a vacation in Australia. It spreads quickly among the other passengers, and across the globe. Scientists from the CDC and city officials from Los Angles work on creating a cure and stopping the spread of the virus. 

Plague City: SARS In Toronto (2005) 
Based on the real events when SARS reached Toronto, Canada. The story shows what was happening in the city overall and with the more personal stories focusing on one of the region's biggest hospitals. 

City of Sars (2003) 
This is an anthology that shows different people dealing with the SARS outbreak in China. 

Robin Cook's Invasion (1997)
Based on the novel Invasion by Robin Cook [First Published in 1997] Small black rocks from space infect people with something that mutates them. Scientist’s network and share information to save the world. 

Fatal Contact: Bird Flu In America (1996) 
A Mutated bird flu is spreading around the world. A team of experts search for the carriers and find a cure. 

The Stand (1994) (2020) 
Based on The Stand, by Stephen King [First Published in 1978] 
man-made plague gets out of the lab and quickly spreads and kills most of the world’s population. Then the story takes a supernatural turn with most of the remaining population from North America go to Las Vegas, NV or Boulder, CO.

And The Band Played On (1993) 
Based on the book And The Band Played On: Politics, People, and the AIDS Epidemic by Randy Shilts [First Published in 1987]. The story of the AIDS Virus, the politics surrounding the Virus and the people involved in stopping it during its early days.   

I Am Legend
(1964/2007) The Omega Man (1971) Based on the short story I am Legend by Richard Matheson [First Published in 1954]. Most of humanity has been killed or mutated by a virus the last man that is immune or vaccinated depending on version seeks to find the cure.

In 1908 the construction on the Titanic begins.
April 10, 1912 The Titanic sets sail on its maiden voyage
April 15, 1912 The Titanic Sinks        
May 14, 1912 The first Titanic film is premieres. 
September 1, 1985 The Titanic is found

Titanic: Blood and Steel (2012)
This is a mini-series starting with the construction of the RMS Titanic at the shipyard in Belfast, Ireland; The people who build her, and the events happening at that place and time.

Chambermaid on the Titanic (1997)
A blue-collar worker wins a contest to see the departure of the Titanic. While on the trip he shares his room with a chambermaid on the Titanic. Upon his return he learns his wife cheated on him, so he tells lies about his night with the chambermaid.

Titanic’s First and Only Voyage
Titanic (2012)
Miniseries about the maiden voyage of the Titanic told from various points of view.

Saving the Titanic (2012)
TV movie tells the story about the heroic electricians, engineers, engine room crew that keep the electric power running as the Titanic sank.

Titanic: The Legend Goes On… (2000)
Animated version of the disaster. This has a fictional Cinderella type meeting her prince aboard the ship.

The Legend of the Titanic (1999)
A mouse tells his grandchildren the true story of what happened on the Titanic. 

Titanic (1997)
James Cameron tells a story of an ill-fated love between Aristocrat Rose Bukater and starving artist Jack Dawson with the Titanic Disaster as the background.

Titanic (1996)
The miniseries tells has stories of people in different rich and poor passengers. Including a romance between a poor thief and an Irish Immigrant. 

Titanic (1984)
A made for TV movie about the Titanic hitting an iceberg and sinking. 

SOS Titanic (1979)
A made for TV movie that features stories from all three passenger classes and the crew.  

A Night To Remember (1958)
Based on A Night To Remember by, Walter Lord [First Published in 1955] The film is about the final hours of the Titanic Told from the viewpoint of the ships second officer. 

Titanic (1953)
A married couple on the verge of divorce and fighting for custody of the children board the Titanic. As this is happening their oldest daughter falls for a boy from the underclass passengers.

Titanic (1943)
A German propaganda piece that portrays Germans as being remarkably heroic during the Titanic disaster. 

Atlantic A.K.A. Titanic: Disaster in the Atlantic (1929)
This movie centers on several of the richest passengers during the voyage and disaster.

Titanic 666 (2022)
A large cruise ship following the planned route the Titanic was to take the ship begins to be haunted by the ghosts of the Titanic. 

SOS Titanic Inquiry (2012)
After the sinking of the Titanic a formal British Board of Trade inquiry was conducted. A major point was to determine if another ship, the Californian, saw the sinking ship and received its distress signals.

Titanic 2 (2010)
On an anniversary of the original departure of the Titanic a modern luxury liner named Titanic 2 follows the same path. While on the voyage a tidal wave sends an iceberg on a collision course with the ship. 

Doctor Who: Voyage of the Dammed (2007)
The Doctor finds a space cruise ship based on the RMS Titanic. The space Titanic has been sabotaged and set on a collision course with Earth. Will the Doctor save the day?

In Search on the Titanic (2004)
An animated adventure about a group of friends that help the King of Atlantis recover the Titanic.  

Britannic (2000)
Britannic was a sister ship of the Titanic. During WWI; the Britannic was pressed into service as a hospital ship and was sank in 1916. The story is a fictional story of what may have happened on the ship on its final voyage before it sank. 

TITanic 2000 (1999)
This is sex comedy about a lesbian vampire looking for her queen upon the doomed Titanic 2000. 

Raise the Titanic (1980) 
The US government need a rare mineral for a weapon to keep the USSR at bay discover that a large supply sank with the Titanic. To get the mineral The US Navy finds and raises the Titanic. Based on the novel Raise the Titanic! By, Clive Cussler [First Published in 1976].
